QuiltCon Block Challenge

Your challenge is to use the colors of the QuiltCon logo to make a quilt block that reflects what modern quilting means to you.  We encourage you to stretch yourself and plan an interesting composition that represents your own unique voice.

Entries are now open and will remain open through August 15, 2012 now closed. During this time ohfransson.com author and MQG Board Member, Elizabeth Hartman, will curate the submitted blocks, many of which will be featured on The Modern Quilt Guild’s blog. Blocks will be featured on the blog during the entire entry period, so please don’t hesitate to submit your blocks any time between now and August 15.

After August 15, Elizabeth will select 20 or more of her favorite blocks and will use them to make a quilt that will be displayed at QuiltCon and awarded to a lucky winner.

As a way of saying “thank you” to the City of Austin, the remaining blocks will be used to make quilts for Austin Children’s Shelter.

Please follow these guidelines when constructing and submitting your blocks:

    1. Blocks should be 12½” tall x the width of your choice. That could mean 12½” x 5”, 12½” x 24”, or anything wider, more narrow, or in between. Be creative!
    2. Blocks should be machine pieced. Any piecing style is welcome, but please avoid using hand sewing, applique, embroidery, fabric markers, or any other embellishments.
    3. Please use only “quilt shop quality” 100% cotton or cotton/linen fabrics in colors consistent with the QuiltCon logo (tangerine, gold, citrine, lime, aqua, turquoise, white, and gray).  Please feel free to include as many or few of the logo colors as you like, but avoid adding additional colors. Both print and solid fabrics are welcome.
    4. Use your own judgment when selecting thread. Our preference is white or light gray 100% cotton thread, but any coordinating thread of good quality will do.
    5. Each quilter may submit up to 3 blocks.
    6. Each submitted block must be accompanied by a Block Challenge Entry Form. Please send your finished block(s) and entry form(s) to:QuiltCon Block Challenge

  1. If you’re a guild officer or other team leader sending a package of blocks from multiple entrants, take care to include a     separate entry form signed by each quilter and securely attached to that quilter’s block.
  2. Help us keep this process streamlined by sending only finished blocks. Please avoid sending partially completed blocks, additional fabric, or other supplies.

We look forward to seeing what you create!
